West Virginia reports more than 5,000 new COVID-19 cases for second straight day

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Friday that 17,364 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 2,547 since the last report. In total, 5,061 new cases were reported Friday.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (180), Barbour (117), Lewis (100), Randolph (289) and Webster (50) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of 38 active cases in the last 24 hours.

Thirteen additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – of a 66-year old male from Mineral County, a 73-year old male from Jefferson County, an 83-year old male from Jefferson County, a 57-year old male from Raleigh County, a 33-year old female from Monroe County, a 58-year old female from Mason County, a 79-year old female from Monongalia County, a 68-year old male from Doddridge County, a 78-year old male from Wood County, an 86-year old female from Jefferson County, a 63-year old male from Taylor County, an 88-year old male from Jefferson County, and an 83-year old female from Harrison County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of January 14, 2022, there are currently 17,364 COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 13 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 5,516 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

About 846 residents are hospitalized with the virus (72% unvaccinated, 28% vaccinated), with 206 currently in intensive care (86% unvaccinated, 14% vaccinated) and 130 on a ventilator (91% unvaccinated, 9% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 19.12%.

A total of 942,475 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 53% of the state. Of those, 361,966 have received their booster dose.
