West Virginia reports 813 active COVID cases, two new deaths on Wednesday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Wednesday that 813 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of one since the last report. 

Locally, reported active case totals are: Upshur (15), Barbour (7), Lewis (6), Randolph (5) and Webster (2) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of two active cases in the last 24 hours. 

Two additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 63-year old female from Cabell County and a 76-year old female from Preston County. 

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of May 4, 2022, there are currently 813 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been two deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 6,872 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release. 

About 109 residents are hospitalized with the virus (49% unvaccinated, 51% vaccinated), with 25 currently in intensive care (52% unvaccinated, 48% vaccinated) and 12 on a ventilator (58% unvaccinated, 42% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 5.05%. 

A total of 974,744 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 54% of the state. Of those, 471,988 are fully vaccinated and have received their booster dose.
