West Virginia reports 812 active COVID cases, 13 new deaths on Tuesday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Tuesday that 812 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 42 since the last report. 

Locally, reported active case totals are: Upshur (13), Barbour (7), Lewis (11), Randolph (7) and Webster (1) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of one active case in the last 24 hours. 

Thirteen additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – an 89-year old female from Harrison County, a 55-year old male from Mingo County, a 67-year old female from Logan County, an 86-year old female from Calhoun County, a 92-year old female from Raleigh County, an 87-year old male from Lincoln County, a 79-year old male from Wood County, a 98-year old female from Kanawha County, a 64-year old male from Kanawha County, a 77-year old male from Wyoming County, an 82-year old female from Raleigh County, a 71-year old female from Fayette County, and a 94-year old female from Harrison County. 

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of May 3, 2022, there are currently 812 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 13 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 6,870 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release. 

About 100 residents are hospitalized with the virus (47% unvaccinated, 53% vaccinated), with 23currently in intensive care (52% unvaccinated, 48% vaccinated) and 14 on a ventilator (57% unvaccinated, 43% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 6.23%. 

A total of 974,581 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 54% of the state. Of those, 470,611 are fully vaccinated and have received their booster dose.
