West Virginia reports 544 active COVID cases, one new death on Friday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Friday that 544 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 44 since the last report. 

Locally, reported active case totals are: Upshur (6), Barbour (6), Lewis (4), Randolph (10) and Webster (0) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of one active case in the last 24 hours. 

One additional death has been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 93-year old male from Mason County. 

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of April 22, 2022, there are currently 544 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There has been one death reported since the last report, with a total of 6,823 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release. 

About 78 residents are hospitalized with the virus (53% unvaccinated, 47% vaccinated), with 22 currently in intensive care (32% unvaccinated, 68% vaccinated) and 11 on a ventilator (46% unvaccinated, 54% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 2.81%. 

A total of 972,953 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 54% of the state. Of those, 458,811 are fully vaccinated and have received their booster dose.
