West Virginia reports 459 active COVID cases, three new deaths on Wednesday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Wednesday that 459 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 13 since the last report. 

Locally, reported active case totals are: Upshur (5), Barbour (3), Lewis (3), Randolph (14) and Webster (0) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of two active cases in the last 24 hours. 

Three additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 62-year old female from Braxton County, a 66-year old female from Wyoming County, and a 73-year old male from Kanawha County. 

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of April 20, 2022, there are currently 459 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 3 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 6,807 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release. 

About 80 residents are hospitalized with the virus (46% unvaccinated, 54% vaccinated), with 22 currently in intensive care (32% unvaccinated, 68% vaccinated) and 12 on a ventilator (50% unvaccinated, 50% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 2.76%. 

A total of 972,575 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 54% of the state. Of those, 455,529 are fully vaccinated and have received their booster dose.
