West Virginia reports 3,339 active COVID-19 cases, 20 new deaths on Friday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Friday that 3,339 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of three cases since the last report. 

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (55), Barbour (63), Lewis (36), Randolph (28) and Webster (30) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of nine active cases in the last 24 hours. 

Twenty additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – of an 83-year old female from Putnam County, an 88-year old male from Hampshire County, a 66-year old female from Mingo County, an 82-year old male from Logan County, a 70-year old male from Wood County, a 92-year old female from Mingo County, an 80-year old male from Fayette County, a 73-year old female from Kanawha County, a 75-year old male from Jefferson County, an 84-year old male from Wood County, a 70-year old female from Berkeley County, a 64-year old male from Wayne County, an 81-year old female from Fayette County, a 78-year old female from Lincoln County, a 63-year old male from Braxton County, a 92-year old male from Raleigh County, a 60-year old male from Randolph County, a 79-year old male from Raleigh County, an 87-year old female from Wyoming County, and a 71-year old female from Hampshire County. 

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of February 25, 2022, there are currently 3,339 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 20 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 6,308 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release. 

About 588 residents are hospitalized with the virus (64% unvaccinated, 36% vaccinated), with 133 currently in intensive care (79% unvaccinated, 21% vaccinated) and 76 on a ventilator (87% unvaccinated, 13% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 5.97%. 

A total of 961,096 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 54% of the state. Of those, 409,931 are fully vaccinated and have received their booster dose.
