West Virginia reports 301 new COVID-19 cases, two additional deaths on Thursday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Thursday that 301 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State.

Locally, new cases were reported in Upshur (3), Barbour (1), Lewis (9), Randolph (12) and Webster (2) counties.

A total of 34 cases are currently active in Upshur County, according to the DHHR. Cases continue to surge in Randolph County, which is now reporting 182 active cases.

Two additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 49-year old female from Kanawha County and a 71-year old male from Mercer County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of May 20, 2021, there have been 2,862,424 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 159,450 total cases and 2,769 deaths,” according to a press release.

About 5,892 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 150,789 people have recovered and 2,769 have died. The daily percent positive was 4.27%.

A total of 708,195 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said. That’s about 40% of the state.
