CHARLESTON, W.Va. — With July 4, 2026 fast approaching, West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) special-edition license plates commemorating America’s 250th anniversary are selling fast.

“This license plate is not only a testament to our country, but a memorial to the men and women who have served and sacrificed so that America remains free,” said Everett Frazier, commissioner of the DMV. “This is not just a license plate. This is an opportunity to be inspired by their lives, to remember them, and to have pride in their contributions to keeping us free.”

Since Governor Patrick Morrisey, the DMV and West Virginia Tourism unveiled the new plate on May 19, 2026, more than 1,500 of the semiquincentennial license plates have been sold at DMV offices across the state. The limited-edition plate had a total production of 5,000, each uniquely numbered and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The license plate is still available at every DMV office in West Virginia. Here are tips for getting yours:

  • This limited-edition plate is available for purchase in person at your local DMV office, where you will receive your plate immediately.
  • There is a $10 scenic plate fee, in addition to your regular annual renewal fee of $51.50. If you are turning in another plate with time still available on your registration, this cost will be prorated.
  • This plate has been specially numbered. Personalized plates are not available in this design.
  • Guests with questions about the new plate, or those who cannot travel to a DMV office in person, should use the DMV’s toll-free number (800) 642-9066 or customer service number (304) 558-3900.

DMV regional offices are located in Beckley, Berkeley Springs, Charles Town, Clarksburg, Elkins, Fairmont, Flatwoods, Franklin, Huntington, Kanawha City (Charleston), Keyser, Lewisburg, Logan, Martinsburg, Moorefield, Morgantown, Moundsville, Parkersburg, Point Pleasant, Princeton, Spencer, Summersville, Weirton, Welch, Williamson and Winfield.

The special plate features an American flag and fireworks in a dark sky, above green mountains with the New River Gorge Bridge, along Route 19, in the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, in Fayette County. The design celebrates America, in a uniquely West Virginia way.
