West Virginia back above 2,000 active COVID cases, DHHR reports Thursday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Thursday that 2,079 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 284 since the last report. 

Locally, reported active case totals are: Upshur (36), Barbour (19), Lewis (16), Randolph (21) and Webster (4) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of 15 active cases in the last 24 hours. 

Seven additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 93-year old female from Greenbrier County, a 76-year old male from Raleigh County, a 90-year old female from Raleigh County, a 68-year old male from Putnam County, a 78-year old male from Jefferson County, a 63-year old female from Jackson County and a 59-year old female from Wood County. 

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of May 19, 2022, there are currently 2,079 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been seven deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 6,912 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release. 

About 149 residents are hospitalized with the virus (46% unvaccinated, 54% vaccinated), with 22 currently in intensive care (36% unvaccinated, 64% vaccinated) and 11 on a ventilator (64% unvaccinated, 36% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 7.26%. 

A total of 977,002 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 55% of the state. About 488,263 booster doses have been administered.
