BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — Karli Hamrick, a 2019 West Virginia Wesleyan College economics and marketing graduate and MBA degree candidate, has been published in the Undergraduate Economic Review that is supported by the Department of Economics and The Ames Library at Illinois Wesleyan University.

The title of Hamrick’s paper is “Is Diamond a Resource Curse for Africa?”

Hamrick is the first Wesleyan student to have an economics paper published in the highly competitive Undergraduate Economic Review.  Submissions from colleges and universities from throughout the world are reviewed and selected by the editors.

The Weston, WV native was a member of the Dean’s List during each of her four undergraduate years at Wesleyan and earned enough credit hours to receive a B.S. in economics and a B.S. in marketing.

Since May, she has served as a public relations intern at United Hospital Center-WVU Medicine.

Hamrick was president of Delta Mu Delta, the international business honorary, and is a member of Alpha Mu Alpha, the national marketing honorary.

She also served as the president of Enactus, Wesleyan’s highly successful business organization that provides entrepreneurial approaches through community service.

Under her leadership, the team created new approaches to help solve the drug epidemic affecting West Virginia, specifically through budgeting, finance, resume building, job placement, and environmental awareness classes for those in substance-abuse recovery at the Opportunity House, a local transitional home in Buckhannon.

Hamrick’s supervising advisor for the publication was Dr. Tuan Le, assistant professor of economics.  Hamrick and Dr. Le worked together for more than six months compiling research and writing and editing the article.

“I am so grateful to Dr. Le for his assistance with this paper,” said Hamrick.  “He insisted that we should work to publish it and he was invested in my research from the beginning.  He helped provide a great opportunity that will help me excel in life after Wesleyan.”

“We are very proud of Karli’s many accomplishments, especially this honor of having her economics paper published by the Undergraduate Economic Review,” said Dr. Le. “This is a noteworthy accomplishment for Karli and the Thomas H. Albinson II School of Business at Wesleyan.”

The West Virginia Wesleyan College Thomas H. Albinson II School of Business offers undergraduate majors in economics, business administration, economics, management, marketing, and sport business and a master’s of business administration.
