Wesleyan baseball drops four straight to Glenville State

GLENVILLE — The West Virginia Wesleyan College Bobcats traveled to Glenville State University to face off against the Pioneers in a four-game series this past weekend and they dropped all four games.

Game 1 Saturday

Glenville State got it started in game one in the bottom of second with an one-single from Luis Liriano to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.

The Bobcats finally answered back in the top of the fifth with a three-run home run from Devin Johnson to make it 3-1.

The lead wasn’t held for long as the Pioneers hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game up.

Glenville State then secured three runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-3.

Wesleyan was unable to come up with any answers and dropped the first game of the series 6-3.

Alex Hernandez was the losing pitcher for Wesleyan and Julian Minay got the win for Glenville.

Game 2 Saturday

Glenville State kept the momentum going in game two by putting up 12 runs in the bottom of the second.

The Bobcats finally broke the scoreboard in the top of the third with a one-run single from Grant Shumaker to make it 12-1.

The Pioneers got that run back in the bottom of the fourth with an one-run double from Luke Sweigar.

Wesleyan put up two runs in the top of the fifth with one-run singles from Shumaker and Johnson to make it 13-3.

Glenville State then scored four runs through the bottom of the fifth and sixth inning and shut Wesleyan down for the rest of the game to take game two of the series.

Broderick Rohrbaugh got the loss for the Bobcats and Diego Tamari got the win.

Game 1 Sunday

On Sunday, Glenville State took charge as they were able to accumulate nine runs off 10 hits with three of the 10 hits being homeruns.

The Bobcats put up one run in the top of the first off a one-run double thanks to Johnson.

Wesleyan was kept silent for the rest of the game and only came up with seven hits to go down 3-0 in the series.

Hunter Eplin got the loss and Austin Corn got the win For Glenville.

Game 2 Sunday

In the final game of the series and Wesleyan’s last chance to steal a win, the Bobcats gained the lead in the top of the second due to an RBI from Josh Ayala to make it 1-0.

The Pioneers answered back by putting up a four spot in the bottom of the second to take a 4-1 lead.

The Bobcats slowly climbed its way back by putting up two runs in the top of the third and fifth inning with an RBI from Thatcher Poteat and an RBI double from Ayala to make it 4-3.

Glenville State extended its lead in the bottom of the fifth and sixth inning by putting up five runs and completed the sweep winning the final game of the series 9-3.

Anthony Hernandez got the loss for the Bobcats and Cole Grady got the win.

Wesleyan looks to end its season on a high note and end its losing streak by taking on Davis and Elkins College in a four-game series. The first two games will be played in Elkins on Friday, May 3, at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. The final two games will be played in Buckhannon on Sunday, May 5, at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
