Students and families are being encouraged to walk or bicycle to school Wednesday, October 7, as West Virginia marks Walk & Roll to School Day.
The West Virginia Governor’s Highway Safety Program is working with schools, police and community leaders on the event, according to its October 5 release. It falls during National Pedestrian Safety Month.
“As autumn weather sets in and morning light decreases, drivers must remain alert, slow down in school zones, and make pedestrian and cyclist safety a top priority every single day,” program Director Jack McNeely said in the release.
For students, the program recommends marked crossings, bright or reflective clothing and properly fitted helmets for bicycle, scooter and skateboard riders. Children should look left, right and left again before crossing; younger children should have adult supervision. Phones and headphones should be put away near traffic.
Drivers are urged to follow school-zone speed limits, yield to pedestrians and put phones away.
Activity information is at walkbiketoschool.org. The release also links to pedestrian safety guidance, bicycle safety guidance and state resources. The state program can be reached at 304-926-2509.
