Volleyball Lady ‘Cats swept by D&E in home match

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Wesleyan volleyball team (3-13, 3-4 Mountain East Conference) dropped a match versus Davis & Elkins (9-9, 6-1 MEC) on Saturday night at Rockefeller Center.
 
WVWC Leaders
Lexis Tatum was the leader for kills with seven. Payton Hefner distributed 14 assists. Makenzie Yates sliced a service ace.
 
Maddi Carpenter and Autumn Molenhouse each tallied six digs. Milan Reynolds and Jayla Cowherd each racked up one block solo. Reynolds and Joelle Lalla both picked up four block assists.
 
Davis & Elkins Leaders
Macie Magallon (17), Molly Jandris (12) and Maria Isabel Butruce Candiota (10) all totaled double-digit kills. Setter Brilane Manchego passed 42 assists. Magallon had a game-high two service aces.
 
Libero Mariah Autobee snatched 10 digs. Gracjana Rozanska contributed four block assists.
 
Inside Set One
The opening set was knotted up at four when the Senators scored seven unanswered points to take an 11-4 lead. The Lady Bobcats responded and claimed the ensuing four points to cut the deficit to three points. With the score at 15-12, the Senators scored four straight points to regain a seven-point cushion. Wesleyan decreased the D&E lead to three points at 21-18. The Senators closed out the first set and won the final four points to solidify a 25-18 victory.
 
Inside Set Two
The second set featured 11 tie scores and three lead changes. D&E held a 14-12 lead when WVWC sparked a 4-0 run to go ahead by two. The run was highlighted by a block from Anaya Hyman and Reynolds, a block solo by Reynolds, and a block by Yates and Reynolds. Wesleyan padded their lead to 19-16 after a block by Lalla and Hyman.
 
The Senators fought back and won the next five decisions to pull ahead 21-19. WVWC tied the score at 21 after Yates notched a service ace. The next four points were split to make the score 23-23. D&E took the final two points and prevailed, 25-23.
 
Inside Set Three
The Lady ‘Cats trailed 6-5 when D&E sparked a 5-0 run to go up 11-5. The Senators extended their lead to 14-7 after Magallon’s 14th kill of the night. Tatum’s seventh kill of the evening put the Lady Bobcats within four points at 20-16. The Senators took five out of the final seven points to take the final set, 25-18.
