BUCKHANNON — National School Counseling Week was celebrated throughout schools in Upshur County February 1st through February 5th. Sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), National School Counseling Week focuses public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within the school system and how students are different as a result of what school counselors do for our students, families, and schools.

School counselors are actively engaged in helping students reach their fullest potential, as they identify their strengths, interests, and talents. ASCA executive director, Jill Cook, expresses, “School counselors work with all students to remove barriers to learning by addressing students’ academic concerns, postsecondary options, and social/emotional skills. School counseling programs help to increase student achievement and provide a much-needed resources for students, parents, teachers, and administrators. School counselors are integral to student success.”

Buckhannon-Upshur High School Social/Emotional Learning Specialist, Wilson Harvey, shares, “It is an honor to serve the students of Upshur County as a school counselor, and to be amongst such incredible school counseling peers. I’m constantly inspired by the ways in which my colleagues address the social/emotional/mental health needs of our students while also helping them to chart a successful course towards a future that aligns with their goals.”

This special week honors school counselors and provides recognition for those who “implement comprehensive school counseling programs, a vital part of the educational process for all students as they meet the challenges of the 21st century.” Upshur County Schools is fortunate to have dedicated professionals who work cooperatively to ensure student success and well-being.
