Tennis Bucs stay unbeaten after downing Wheeling Park in rematch

WHEELING – The Buckhannon-Upshur tennis Bucs remained perfect on the year with a win in a rematch against the Wheeling Park Patriots last Thursday.

The Bucs edged their regional foe by the slimmest of margins by a 4-3 score after downing Wheeling Park last week at home by a 5-2 score.

Buckhannon-Upshur improved to 4-0 on the year.

The Bucs picked up two points in doubles action as Aden Pitts and Caden Andrick beat Braeden Koon and Wyatt Andrews at No. 1 by an 8-4 score and Mauricio Menendez and Hank Phillips knocked off Nick Trischler and Grant Kenamond at No. 2 by an 8-3 count.

In singles action, the Bucs garnered two wins out of their four matches as Andrick downed Wyatt Andrews at No. 2 (8-2) and Phillips bested Evan Stingle at No. 4 (8-0).

“I was pleased we got the win but I know Aden and Mauricio had higher hopes for their singles rematches,” noted Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jason Rock. “Mauricio just had an off day and couldn’t find his shots. Those happen and he was disappointed but he’s played long enough to know he can bounce back.”

“Aden was on serve with his opponent until about halfway through the match,” Rock added. “I think a few factors came into play with his loss but I love that Aden never makes excuses. He is a competitor and as a coach when the first thing he says loading up the bus after the match is, ‘I hope to meet that kid at regionals. I want another shot at him.’ You got to love his fighting spirit. Aside from the three losses, the other four matches really took care of business which secured our boys’ win.”

The Bucs had their outings with Washington on Saturday and Grafton on Monday wiped out by the weather.

They will play again Tuesday hosting Liberty.
