SUTTON – Samantha Shreve and Mia Sappey ran one and two for the 10th-ranked Buckhannon-Upshur cross-country Lady Bucs in the Braxton County Invitational on Saturday.

Shreve took first place out of 28 other runners with a time of 22:23.8 while Sappey earned runner-up honors with a time of 22:46.6.

The Lady Bucs claimed first place in the two-team field as they scored 22 points while Richwood was second with 36. Braxton County, Clay County, Gilmer County and Webster County competed at the invitational but did not field complete teams.

Jessica Williams ran seventh for the Lady Bucs with a time of 24:16.4 while Miah Reger was ninth with a time of 25:09.5 and Malia Bowers rounded out the B-U scoring placing 12th with a time of 27:39.1.

The rest of the Buckhannon-Upshur line-up was Harlee Gillum running 13th (28:24.3), Brianna Dalton placing 18th (25:45.9), Pressley Bowers taking 23rd (31:32.1), Haley White running 24th (31:59.9), Madelyn Frye placing 27th (36:44.4) and Ryanna Hines taking 28th (39.11.8).

Head coach Taylor Stacy and his team took this meet on short notice after being scheduled to run at Preston, but Preston has shut down their athletic teams’ activities due to COVID-19 protocols.

“Our team has been running really hard lately, so it was nice to see them push through some tired legs and bring home the win,” stated Stacy. “Shreve ran another great race as she has all season. Sappey and Williams both laid out some solid times to help them pull ahead. I’m excited to see what this final month of training brings for us. We’ve done great progressing all year but our job isn’t done yet.”

The Lady Bucs are scheduled to run again this Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Fairmont Times Invitational at the Apple Valley Golf Course.
