Roger Lee Trusler

Roger Lee Trusler, 75, of Marlinton, passed away Thursday, August 8, 2024, at CAMC Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea.

Born October 20, 1948, in Buckhannon, he was a son of the late Arthur Gordon Trusler and Eva Lucille Harris Trusler.

Roger was a graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan [BA Degree-Education]; West Virginia University [MA Degree-Counseling and Guidance]; and Marshall University [MA-School Administration]. In July 2006, Roger retired from Pocahontas County Schools after 33 years of service as teacher-counselor, Director of Special Education, Director of Federal Programs, School Transportation and Food Services, Director of Special Projects and Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent.

In addition to Roger’s commitment to education, he had a commitment to community service. He was a member of Marlinton Town Council; a 43-year member Pocahontas County Parks and Recreation Board having served as Chairman, Secretary and was a founding Board Member; 25 years Pocahontas County Family Resource Board Member; a 49-year member of the Marlinton Rotary Club; and had served eight terms on the Marlinton Planning Commission and Pocahontas County Chamber of Commerce Board.

Roger loved Pocahontas County, its people and its natural beauty.

Everyone who knew Roger knew of his unbounded energy in the pursuit of the betterment of the community, county and all who live here. He was instrumental in bringing the New River Community and Technical College degree program classes to Pocahontas County High School, initializing the development of the One Room University and working to fund and build the Community Wellness Center in Marlinton. He served cooperatively with others, always searching for that next possibility to enhance the lives of children, youth and adults who live in Pocahontas County. He was a strong proponent of education for opening opportunities and constantly worked to find the means to provide for his community those things which most communities take for granted. In 2014, the Chamber of Commerce recognized Roger with the Individual of the Year Award.

Roger is survived by a brother, Arthur Gordon Trusler, Jr., of Buckhannon.

A Memorial Service was held Sunday, August 11, 2024, at Marlinton United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to a charity of your choice.

The family would like to thank Judy Sanders, Jane Dumire, Joe Smith, Gary and Becky Taylor, Brenda Snyder, Dr. Nicholas Snyder for their friendship and support of Roger.

Special thanks to the Marlinton Rescue Squad and staff at Pocahontas Memorial Hospital and CAMC Greenbrier Valley Medical Center.
