Robert Day Allman

Robert Day Allman, age 99, of Buckhannon, died Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at Crestview Manor in Jane Lew. He was the last surviving member of his family.

He was born to the late William Carroll and Margaret Beatrice Day Allman on September 17, 1926, at home on Beech Lick in Horner, WV, and eventually residing just four miles up the road and often commenting, “I didn’t go far in life.”

On April 28, 1947, he was united in marriage to Lou Jeanne Stalnaker Allman, the mother of his children, who preceded him in death on January 31, 1993.

On September 17, 1993, he was united in marriage to Samueline R. “Sammie” Gillespie Allman who survives.

In addition to his parents and first wife, he was also preceded in death by one son Robert Michael “Mike” Allman, one sister Carol Jean Allman, one brother George William Allman, one granddaughter Marcella Dawn Allman, and one great-great granddaughter Payton Marie Allman.

In addition to his wife Sammie, he is also survived by one son William C. Allman and wife Sharon of Buckhannon; one daughter Sharon and husband Jim Tomblyn of Buckhannon; two stepsons: Scott Queener and wife Mary and Perry Queener and wife Sherri, both of Summersville; seven grandchildren: Tana, Stacey, Robbie, Jesse, Seth, Joshua, and Jack; twelve great grandchildren, including special great grandson Robert M. “Robbie” Allman, III and wife Haley; and three great-great grandchildren: Michael Day Allman, Kade Waylon Allman, and Wren Paisley Allman.

Bob graduated from Weston High School with the Class of 1944, and never missed a day of school. He was a proficient typist and could type 120 words per minute on a manual typewriter. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on his 17th birthday and served in the Pacific Theatre during WWII, serving aboard the USS LST-823, and obtaining the rank of Yeoman Second Class. He later served in the U.S. Army Reserve with the 100th Airbourne Division and the 374th Field Artillery Battalion, Battery B, obtaining the rank of Master Sergeant before his honorable discharge.

He was a lifetime member of the Buckhannon VFW Post 3663, the Buckhannon American Legion Post 7, and the US LST (Landing Ship, Tank) Association.

Bob then began a career with the US Postal Service which spanned 45 years: Rural Carrier at Horner, WV for 6 years, Rural Carrier and Clerk at Buckhannon for 6 years, Supervisor and Assistant Postmaster at Buckhannon for 8 years, Postmaster at Buckhannon for 2 years, and Director of Field Operations in Northern WV at Clarksburg for 18 years from 1971-onward where he oversaw 350 post offices. In his extensive career with the Postal Service, he missed only 7 sick days.

Bob was a farmer; a traveler, visiting all 50 states, Europe, Canada, South America, Central America, and the Caribbean Islands; an avid camper; a talented dancer of many styles, including the square dance, the polka, and the waltz; a daily Scrabble player; and a commissioned Admiral of the Cherry River Navy. He was a member of the Tallmansville Baptist Church.

Bob was a charter member of the world’s greatest generation and completed one circle to join a greater circle.

The family will receive friends at the Heavner & Cutright Funeral Chapel on Monday, December 22, 2025, from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM — at which time the funeral will begin with Pastor Tim Lewis officiating. Interment will follow in the Lorentz Cemetery, where the Upshur County Honor Guard will conduct military honors.
