Ping pong ball size hail possible in Friday severe storm

It’s time to bring in your pets! The National Weather Service in Charleston has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Upshur County until 4:45 p.m. Friday that could bring high winds and large hail.

According to the NWS, a line of storms moving northeast from Glenville at 4 p.m. could produce ping pong ball sized hail and 60 mph wind gusts.

“People and animals outdoors will be injured,” the warning reads. “Expect hail damage to roofs, siding, windows, and vehicles. Expect wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees.”

The alert advises residents to move inside.

“For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building,” the NWS says. “Prepare immediately for large hail and damaging winds. People outside should move immediately to shelter inside a strong building. Stay away from windows.”

A less urgent severe thunderstorm watch is in effect through 10 p.m. tonight.
