Notice: The City of Buckhannon Transfer Station will remain closed Thursday due to a malfunctioning scale. The Recycling Center remains open, and all waste pickups will continue on the regular schedule.

Phillip Arrington Riggs

Phillip Arrington Riggs, 90, of Buckhannon, W.Va. died Wednesday, September 16, 2020, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Buckhannon.

He was born July 17, 1930, in Weston, W.Va., a son of the late Sanford H. and Florence Emily Arrington Riggs.

On April 16, 1955 he married Margie Smith who survives.

Also surviving are, one son, Steven Riggs and wife Cynthia of Rock Cave, W.Va.; two grandsons, Casen Riggs of East, Pa. and Timothy Perry and wife Erin of Sago, W.Va. and one great-grandson, Andrew Perry of Sago, W.Va.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his daughter, Debra Diane Perry and great-grandson, Jonathan Perry.

Mr. Riggs served in the U.S. Navy from 1948 – 1952. He worked for Columbia Gas for 39.5 years and was a member of the American Legion.

Friends will be received Friday, September 18, 2020 from 11 a.m. to noon at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at noon. Burial will follow in the Heavner Cemetery in Buckhannon. The Upshur County Honor Guard will perform military honors at the gravesite.

Buckhannon-Upshur held steady at No. 8 in this week’s WVSACA Class AAAA boys’ basketball poll, earning 52 points after a 3-1 week. The Bucs beat Elkins, Grafton and Parkersburg, with their lone loss coming to Class AA No. 3 Bluefield at a neutral site.
