Number of active COVID-19 cases drops below 1,500 in West Virginia

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Wednesday that 1,436 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s a decrease of 146 since the last report. 

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (29), Barbour (21), Lewis (8), Randolph (13) and Webster (25) counties. In Upshur County, that’s a decrease of five active cases in the last 24 hours. 

Eighteen additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – of a 77-year old female from Marion County, a 63-year old female from Jefferson County, a 72-year old male from Marion County, a 74-year old female from Berkeley County, an 86-year old male from Wood County, a 63-year old female from Fayette County, a 74-year old female from Kanawha County, a 66-year old female from Preston County, a 58-year old female from Kanawha County, an 83-year old female from Taylor County, a 64-year old female from Kanawha County, a 63-year old female from Cabell County, a 51-year old female from Monroe County, a 56-year old male from Kanawha County, a 68-year old female from Lewis County, a 60-year old male from Lewis County, an 86-year old male from Greenbrier County, and a 90-year old male from Webster County. 

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of March 9, 2022, there are currently 1,436 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 18 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 6,488 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release. 

About 368 residents are hospitalized with the virus (59% unvaccinated, 41% vaccinated), with 98 currently in intensive care (67% unvaccinated, 33% vaccinated) and 50 on a ventilator (66% unvaccinated, 34% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 3.23%. 

A total of 964,319 people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, the DHHR said.  That’s about 54% of the state. Of those, 415,252 are fully vaccinated and have received their booster dose.
