Drivers on Interstate 64 in Charleston face nighttime and weekend fast-lane closures for work preparing the Fort Hill Bridge for deck replacement. Construction is scheduled to start Tuesday, October 6, according to an October 5 release from the West Virginia Department of Transportation.
Crews will build two crossovers so vehicles can shift to one side of the bridge during construction: one between the Montrose Drive and Oakwood Road interchanges and another between the Lee Street and Bigley Avenue interchanges.

Larger lane closures are planned for January 2027. Triton Construction Inc. plans to route all traffic onto the eastbound side first while replacing the westbound deck, then shift traffic to the westbound side to rebuild the eastbound deck.
“The Fort Hill Bridge is one of the most heavily traveled structures in West Virginia, and this project is critical to preserving it for future generations,” state Transportation Secretary Todd Rumbaugh said in the department’s release.
Nearly 100,000 vehicles use the Kanawha River crossing each day, according to the department. Built in 1975, the bridge is also known as the Eugene A. Carter Memorial Bridge. Triton received the $74.5 million deck-replacement contract in June, an award My Buckhannon covered in July.
The crossover work involves taking out concrete barriers, patching pavement and installing temporary barriers. The department expects the rehabilitation to be finished in spring 2028.

The department advises drivers to budget extra travel time and obey posted work-zone directions. Construction updates are available on the project website; current traffic information is available through WV 511 and the WV511 Drive Safe mobile app.
