More than 4,500 West Virginians have now died from COVID-19, DHHR announces Thursday

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Thursday that 6,662 cases of COVID-19 are currently active in the Mountain State. That’s an increase of 27 since the last report.

Locally, COVID-19 cases are active in Upshur (115), Barbour (71), Lewis (61), Randolph (89) and Webster (46) counties. In Upshur County, that’s an increase of 17 active cases in the last 24 hours.

Twenty-one additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 50-year old male from Tyler County, a 68-year old female from Tyler County, an 85-year old male from Fayette County, a 79-year old male from Kanawha County, a 54-year old male from Tyler County, a 53-year old male from Roane County, a 54-year old male from Fayette County, an 80-year old female from Wetzel County, a 66-year old female from Tyler County, a 62-year old male from Greenbrier County, a 79-year old female from Raleigh County, an 80-year old female from Cabell County, a 90-year old female from Wetzel County, a 69-year old female from Ohio County, a 63-year old female from Berkeley County, and a 72-year old male from Kanawha County.

Other new deaths reported Thursday as result of the Bureau for Public Health’s continuing data reconciliation with the official death certificate include a 58-year old male from Nicholas County, a 63-year old female from Mercer County, a 77-year old male from Raleigh County, an 81-year old male from Marion County, and a 62-year old male from Harrison County. These deaths range from September through October 2021.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of November 4, 2021, there are currently 6,662 active COVID-19 cases statewide. There have been 21 deaths reported since the last report, with a total of 4,511 deaths attributed to COVID-19,” according to a press release.

About 561 residents are hospitalized with the virus (78% unvaccinated, 22% vaccinated), with 184 currently in intensive care (84% unvaccinated, 16% vaccinated) and 103 on a ventilator (85% unvaccinated, 15% vaccinated). The daily percent positive was 6.87%.

A total of 922,427 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said.  That’s about 52% of the state.
