Man arrested for felony shoplifting after allegedly stealing lighters, other items from Buckhannon Walmart

BUCKHANNON – An Upshur County man was arrested for felony shoplifting Tuesday after allegedly stealing items from Walmart.

Jonathan Dean, 34, of Buckhannon, was arrested for third-offense shoplifting, a felony.

According to the criminal complaint in the Upshur County Magistrate Clerk’s Office filed by Sgt. Thomas Posey with the Buckhannon Police Department, on Aug. 29, officers with the Buckhannon Police Department and deputies with the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about an alleged shoplifter at Walmart.

According to the report, Dean paid for some items, but allegedly stole multiple others, including four lighters with a value of $15.92. He also allegedly switched the tags on two clothing items and paid less than the merchant’s stated price. The value of those items totaled $29.96. This offense was witnessed by the Walmart Asset Protection department, the complaint states.

Dean had prior shoplifting convictions with dates of June 4, 2019, and Aug. 2, 2019, according to the file.

Bail was set at $10,000 cash or surety.

The penalty for a conviction of shoplifting third offense is a fine ranging between $500 and and $5,000 and confinement in a state penitentiary for one to 10 years.
