Local health department releases COVID-19 breakthrough information

The Upshur-Buckhannon Health Department released an informative post on social media Wednesday detailing the number of vaccine breakthrough cases locally.

The health department said that moving forward, they plan to release breakthrough information each week on Mondays but noted their top priority remains contact tracing and case investigations.

Here’s the full post:

We will do our best to report vaccine breakthrough cases EACH WEEK on MONDAYS. We will track vaccine breakthroughs from Sunday to Saturday each week. It is important to understand that these numbers may need to be amended because sometimes we are unable to reach the patient until a later date after posting numbers that week. Please keep in mind that case investigations and contact tracing will remain our TOP priority.

To be considered a vaccine breakthrough, the positive COVID case falls under one of these categories:

  1. Has tested or develops symptoms more than 7 days after their first dose of a two-series COVID vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna)
  2. Has tested or develops symptoms anytime after receiving the second dose of a two-series COVID vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna)
  3. Anytime after receiving the J&J COVID vaccine.

Week of August 1-7
105 new cases
80 unvaccinated
25 vaccinated
23.8% vaccine breakthrough infections

Week of August 8-14
154 new cases
129 unvaccinated
25 vaccinated
16.2% vaccine breakthrough infections

Our Wednesday COVID Vaccine Clinics are now by appointment only from 9am-3pm. Please call 304-472-2810 to schedule an appointment. We carry Pfizer, Moderna, and J&J.
