Lady ‘Cat Sydney Baird named MEC Basketball Player of the Week

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – West Virginia Wesleyan’s Sydney Baird and Charleston’s Eddie Colbert III have been named this week’s Mountain East Conference Basketball Players of the Week, the league office announced on Monday afternoon.

The MEC Men’s & Women’s Basketball Player of the Week awards are presented by The Health Plan.

Baird, a freshman from Webster Springs, W.Va., averaged 27.5 points, 2.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game as the Bobcats went 2-0 last week. Baird began the week with 21 points, three rebounds and five assists in a win over Notre Dame College on Wednesday evening. On Saturday in non-conference play against Salem, Baird finished the afternoon with 34 points, four assists and three steals. For the week, she shot a perfect 20-for-20 from the free throw line.

Colbert, a senior forward from Toledo, Ohio, averaged 19.5 points and 7.0 rebounds in a 2-0 week for the Golden Eagles. With Saturday’s win over nationally-ranked West Liberty, Charleston took over sole possession of first place in the Mountain East Conference standings. Colbert began the week with 15 points in UC’s win over Wheeling University. On Saturday at West Liberty, Colbert finished with 24 points, 11 rebounds and two assists. For the week, Colbert shot 50 percent from the floor (11-for-22).
