Lady Bucs fall at home to Hawks, 70-42

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs simply couldn’t slow down an early three-point barrage by the University Hawks in a 70-42 setback Tuesday evening in a home non-conference contest.

University made 13 three-pointers, including five in the first quarter and nine in the first half to send the Lady Bucs to their third straight defeat.

A lay-up by Alyssa Abel pulled the Lady Bucs to within one early, at 7-6, with 3:29 showing on the first-quarter clock, but the Hawks hit four straight three-point shots taking a 19-6 going into the second quarter.

An old-fashioned three-point play by Abel kept the Lady Bucs down by 13, at 25-12, with 6:01 left in the second quarter.

Down 32-14, the Lady Bucs went on a 7-0 run capped off by a Gabby Parke putback to close the gap to 11, at 32-21.

University ended the half on a 9-2 run making it a 41-23 contest at the intermission.

A 7-0 run by the Hawks to start the second half pushed their lead out to 48-23.

B-U managed just three field goals in the third quarter and trailed by a 58-30 margin heading into the final quarter.

The final quarter was all even at 12-12.

Kenna Maxwell led the Lady Bucs with 18 points while Abel added seven.

Hannah Stemple paced University with 16 points.

The loss dropped the Lady Bucs to 8-6 on the year heading into Friday’s road clash with Philip Barbour. The game will tip at 7:30 p.m.
