Lady Buc netters edged by Minutemaids, 4-3

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc tennis team was oh so close to picking up a home win against the Lewis County Minutemaids in a 4-3 setback Wednesday evening at the West Virginia Wesleyan courts.

After doubles action, the Lady Bucs went down by a 2-1 score with the No. 2 team of Madelyn Fyre and Mya Critchfield winning by an 8-2 count over Mauren Fisher and Makayla Ferguson.

At No. 3 doubles, the duo of Cate O’Neill and Alexis Wuchner came up just short dropping an 8-6 decision to Mayli Squires and Mackenzie Williams.

In singles action, Frye downed Fisher at No. 3 by an 8-1 score and Mya Critchfield beat Ferguson by an 8-6 count at No. 4.

Lainey Rowan battled but went down to Kennedy WIllison at No. 2 by an 8-5 score.

“We competed and were in most of the matches,” stated Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jason Rock. “Lainey and Cate/Alexis were really close to pulling out wins but came up just short. Shout out to Mya and Madelyn for getting a great win in doubles and backing it up with wins in singles. Both of them played their game and proved to be the better players.”

The loss left the Lady Bucs with a 1-4 mark.

Their outing with Liberty on Friday was postponed because of the weather.

They will be back on the courts Monday hosting University at 4 p.m.
