Davis, W.Va. (June/July 2023) – Canaan Valley Resort’s Windfest Weekend, taking place over the Independence Weekend holiday, June 30-July 2, in the highest mountain valley in the Eastern U.S., will feature kite flying/building demonstrations, live music – including an outdoor performance by the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra – hiking and stargazing opportunities, and much more.

“With the ability to build and fly your own kite, as well as watch experts loft their own massive creations, children and families love Windfest Weekend,” said Matt Baker, general manager at Canaan Valley Resort. “Add in our special slope-side outdoor performance by the acclaimed Wheeling Symphony Orchestra, options for exploring our local woods and waters, relaxing by the pool, or taking in activities in the nearby towns of Davis and Thomas, guests have all they’ll want for a special Independence Weekend getaway.”

Baker said the weekend kicks of Friday evening (June 30th) with the Mountainside Music Series. The Cooley Gang will perform outdoors at the ski area and guests can also enjoy sunset chairlift rides into the night. A stargazing party with an introduction to telescopes will be offered at the main lodge beginning at 9pm.

Kite building workshops, hosted by the New Era Kite Club, will be offered on both Saturday and Sunday. Children and adults will learn how to design, build, and fly their own kite. The Club will also demo stunt kites, including the massive 150-foot Turbine and a 115-foot cobra.

On Sunday, guests can participate in a guided nature hike along the Blackwater River Trail. Enjoy amazing views of the upper Blackwater River and learn about the Northern Hardwood trees native to the area.

The Wheeling Symphony Orchestra will perform on the Bear Paw Plaza at the ski area later that day at 3 pm. Conductor John Gennaro Devlin is one of the nation’s youngest music directors to lead a professional symphony orchestra and he is a sought-after guest conductor with major orchestras across the nation.

Throughout the weekend guests have access to the resort’s outdoor pool, miles of hiking and biking trails, and the 18-hole championship golf course, among other amenities offered at the property.
