House Bill 2805 to reunify Fairmont State University & Pierpont Community and Technical College

The West Virginia House of Delegates earlier today introduced House Bill 2805 to reunify Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community and Technical College.

Since the formation and subsequent separation of the community and technical colleges from their sponsoring four-year institutions, Fairmont State has consistently worked to carry out the higher education policy directives of the Legislature.

Fairmont State supports HB 2805 and believes it will have wide positive impacts to the region and the state. Community and technical college education is a cornerstone of our educational system and aligned with the WV Higher Education Policy Commission and the Council for Community and Technical College Education, Fairmont State will continue to honor and grow these programs to meet industry and student demands.

This reunification will bring together two renowned institutions. The nationally ranked programs at Fairmont State and recognized programs of the renamed Pierpont College of Community and Technical Education will be individually celebrated and strengthened for the betterment of students, faculty and staff.

Fairmont State respects and honors the path for traditional and non-traditional students. Through this reunification, the unified institution will be able to provide all students in the region a comprehensive education that enhances the educational experience in an accessible manner that removes barriers for continuing education. In addition, North Central West Virginia, its industries and students will benefit from an increased industry response and depth of capabilities.

This year, Fairmont State University has recorded increases in enrollment and revenues, and decreases in expenses. In addition, Fairmont State recorded the highest Composite Financial index in the State among four-year state institutions. It is estimated that through the elimination of duplicative services, realized efficiencies can be reinvested into programs and facility enrichment. It is estimated that through an examination and realignment of duplicative services, realized efficiencies can be reinvested into academic programs, students, faculty and staff throughout the entire unified organization.

Should the Legislature decide to enact HB 2805 into law and reunify the two institutions, Fairmont State University stands ready to execute their directive and become a comprehensive, 21st century destination serving all students and industries in North Central West Virginia and beyond.
