Freshman Bucs come up short in opener against Elkins

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur freshman Buccaneers had to wait an extra six days for their basketball opener on Tuesday as their original opener last Wednesday against North Marion was postponed by the weather.

The Bucs instead opened at home with the Elkins Tigers and wound up dropping a 53-43 decision.

The game was tied at 10-10 after the first-quarter of action, but the Tigers won the second quarter by an 18-10 margin for a 28-18 lead at the break.

The Tigers edged the Bucs in the third quarter by a 20-15 margin for a 48-33 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The Bucs doubled up Elkins in the final quarter by a 10-5 count but couldn’t overtake the Tigers.

Jonas Barton led the Bucs in scoring with 12 points while Jevon Westfall had eight and Zikiyah Oliver and Kaiden Marks each had six.

“I am proud of the effort the team put out,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Roberta Hatcher. “We have grown a lot from our first practice and now we know our weak spots and how to build on them.”

Lucas D’Angelo paced Elkins with 15 points.

The Bucs aren’t sure when they will return to the court as they are on a temporary shutdown because of COVID-19 protocols.
