DHHR reports Barbour County death Friday, as new COVID-19 cases statewide continue to fall

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Friday that 998 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State.

Locally, new cases were reported by the DHHR in Upshur (25), Barbour (7) and Lewis (14) counties.

However, the DHHR continues to underreport nearly 400 cases in Upshur County, according to numbers released by the local health department:

  • Upshur-Buckhannon Health Department: 1,732 cases, 241 active
  • DHHR for Upshur County: 1,358 cases, 218 active

My Buckhannon has been following up with the health department as they investigate the cause of the discrepancy, but so far no explanation has been determined.

Seven additional deaths have been attributed to the disease, according to the DHHR – a 64-year old male from Barbour County, an 86-year old female from Mercer County, a 92-year old male from Kanawha County, an 84-year old female from Cabell County, a 74-year old male from McDowell County, a 97-year old female from Hancock County, and an 84-year old female from Pendleton County.

“The West Virginia DHHR reports as of January 22, 2021, there have been 1,820,409 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 113,615 total cases and 1,856 total deaths,” according to a press release.

The average number of new cases continues to fall. About 1,000 new cases are now being reported daily in West Virginia, returning to levels last seen in early December.

About 25,342 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 86,417 people have recovered and 1,856 have died. The daily percent positive was 4.93%.

A total of 35,991 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said.
