DHHR: More than 2,500 West Virginians have now died from COVID-19

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Friday that 346 new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Mountain State.

The DHHR also reported a total of 173 new deaths — 165 that were discovered to have been previously unreported and eight from the last 24 hours. The death toll now stands at 2,511.

Locally, new cases were reported in Barbour (7), Randolph (2) and Webster (4) counties Friday.

A total of 42 cases are currently active in Upshur County, according to the DHHR.

The eight additional deaths that have been attributed to the disease include a 76-year old male from Kanawha County, a 98-year old female from Randolph County, a 70-year old male from Monongalia County, a 56-year old female from Brooke County, a 74-year old female from McDowell County, a 78-year old female from Morgan County, a 70-year old male from Berkeley County and a 54-year old female from Kanawha County.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of March 12, 2021, there have been 2,280,054 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 134,842 total cases and 2,511 total deaths,” according to a press release.

About 5,280 West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 127,051 people have recovered and 2,511 have died. The daily percent positive was 2,79%.

A total of 232,363 people have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Virginia, meaning they have received both doses of the vaccine, the DHHR said.
