Baseball Bucs pick up two impressive wins over Colts and Indians

BRIDGEPORT – Following their successful run in the Mingo Bay Classic last week in South Carolina, the Buckhannon-Upshur baseball Buccaneers remained hot starting the week with two impressive road wins over the Philip Barbour Colts and Bridgeport Indians.

The Bucs downed the Colts on Monday by a 16-4 score in a five-inning contest halted on the 10-run mercy rule and then picked up a huge win over Bridgeport on Tuesday by a 6-3 score.

Philip Barbour was ranked 13th in the Class AA Metro News Power Rankings while Bridgeport was sixth in Class AAA.

The Bucs never trailed against Philip Barbour as they took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Payton Bennett and Ian Donnen each knocked in a run.

Philip Barbour pushed across a run in the bottom of the first but the Bucs responded with four runs in the top of the second as Tucker Burr and Zach Calef-Boring each knocked in a run and B-U scored the other two on a pair of Colt errors for a 6-1 lead.

Philip Barbour scored three in the bottom of the second making it a 6-4 game but the Bucs answered with a seven-run outburst in the top of the third.

The Bucs mustered four hits in the inning and took advantage of four Philip Barbour errors for a 13-4 advantage.

Buckhannon-Upshur chased across three runs in the fifth without the benefit of a hit upping their lead to 16-4 as the game was halted after five innings

The Bucs had 12 hits in the win with Calef-Bornig and Bennett each getting three and Brayden Hamer adding two.

Burr picked up the win tossing all five innings. He allowed just one earned run on five hits while whiffing seven.

Against the Indians, the Bucs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Calef-Boring drew a lead-off walk and scored on a sacrifice fly by Landon Marple.

Bridgeport tied the game with a run in the bottom of the second but B-U grabbed the lead back in the top of the third when Marple blasted a solo home run over the center field fence.

The Indians tied the game again with a run in the bottom of the fourth at 2-2.

B-U took the lead again with two runs in the top of the fifth.

Hamer singled and scored on a triple by Marple who came home on a single by Donnen giving the Bucs a 4-2 advantage.

Bridgeport made it a 4-3 contest with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

B-U added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh without the benefit of a hit for a 6-3 lead.

Bridgeport put two runners on the bottom of the seventh on a pair of walks, but Buckhannon-Upshur reliever Drahden Rice fanned Phil Reed for the final out of the game.

Marple knocked in three runs on two hits to lead the B-U offense.

Calef-Boring started the game and picked up the win. He went 5 1/3 innings and gave up two earned runs on three hits while striking out eight.

Rice earned the save tossing 1 2/3 innings while not allowing a run and striking out two.

The two wins improved the Bucs to 9-3 overall.

They will host Lewis County on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
