Baseball Bucs have five-game winning streak end after 15-6 setback to Fairmont Senior

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur baseball Buccaneers had their five-game winning streak to start the season came to an end at the hands of Fairmont Senior at home Thursday evening.

The Bucs dropped a 15-6 decision in a game they were their own worst enemy with five errors. Only five of Fairmont Senior’s 16 runs were earned.

The loss dropped the Bucs to 5-1 on the year.

The Bucs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Zach Calef-Boring started the frame with a single, went to second on a single by Jaden Westfall and scored on a single by Landon Marple.

Fairmont Senior chased across three runs in the top of the third but the Bucs answered with a run in the bottom of half of the inning when Marple singled, went to second on a walk to Ian Donnen and scored on Payton Bennett’s single to left making it a 3-2 game.

Things fell apart for the Bucs in the top of the fourth when the Polar Bears erupted for 10 runs taking a 13-2 lead.

Calef-Boring smashed a two-run home run and Marple singled and later scored in the bottom of the fourth making it a 13-6 contest.

Elijah Bryant tripled and scored on a dropped third strike in the fifth inning closing the gap to 13-6 for the Bucs.

Fairmont Senior added two more runs in the top of sixth to wrap up the scoring.

The Bucs had nine hits in the setback with Marple leading the way with three while Calef-Boring had two.

Tucker Burr suffered the loss getting the start and going 3 1/3 innings. He allowed just three earned runs on three hits while striking out six.

Gunner Riley led the Fairmont Senior offense with three hits while knocking in two.

Blake Straight pitched two innings of relief to earn the win. He gave up two runs on two hits.

The Bucs will return to action on their spring break trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on Monday. They will play the Man (W. Va.) Hillbillies at 9 a.m.
