ART26201 to host 9th Annual Young Filmmakers Camp this summer

BUCKHANNON — ART26201, with assistance from West Virginia Wesleyan College, will host the 9th Annual Young Filmmakers Camp at Lascaux Micro-Theater in Buckhannon, West Virginia, this summer.

The five-day workshop will guide students through writing, shooting, and editing a short film. Led by instructors Andrew Carroll, Jon Benjamin, Jess Johnson, and Bryce O’Loughlin, all students will learn the essentials of sharing a compelling story, screenwriting, videography, and editing while working in a collaborative environment. Additionally, students will be introduced to the vocabulary of filmmaking so that they can communicate about their work professionally.

At the end of the week, they will hold a screening of student-produced films so students can celebrate their accomplishments with their friends and families.

CAMP FACULTY

Andrew Carroll is Chair of the English Department at Elkins High School, where he teaches Journalism, Digital Media, and AP English Language and Composition. He is an expert at using narrative nonfiction storytelling to teach students critical thinking and writing skills. Outside of the classroom, Andrew has spent the past decade documenting old-time music and square dance across West Virginia.

Jon Benjamin received a Master of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design from the Rochester Institute of Technology and has been a professional graphic designer for over 20 years. He has created several short documentaries and promotional films. Jon is Associate Professor of Graphic Design at West Virginia Wesleyan College. In addition to a number of art and graphic design classes, Jon teaches Video Production.

Jess Johnson grew up in Summersville, WV, and now resides in Elkins. Jess has a passion for working with young people and enjoys mentoring them as well as fostering their creativity. Jess led a teen program at Elkins-Randolph Public Library prior to the pandemic and anxiously awaits being a part of Young Filmmakers Camp every year.

Bryce O’Loughlin is a media producer and performer from Buckhannon. He graduated from Tulane University with a degree in film studies and digital media production. Bryce has worked on large and small films and as an anchor/reporter for a WV news station.
