Carryout spaghetti benefit dinner for woman fighting breast cancer slated for Saturday

BUCHANNON – The Adrian Volunteer Fire Department will host a benefit carryout spaghetti dinner this Saturday.

The dinner is being organized by Crystal Rutherford, to help Crystal Chidester, who recently discovered she was positive for triple negative breast cancer, which is considered more aggressive than other forms of breast cancer.

“The sad part is her mother found out, almost like a month apart, that she also has breast cancer and there’s no family history,” Rutherford said. “She is doing two rounds of chemo treatments and I think she’s finished up on those and she’s now starting radiation. I’m not sure how much radiation she has to have, but I know she goes tomorrow for radiation, and I just can’t imagine what that family’s going through.”

The dinner is Saturday, Nov. 14, starts at noon and will continue until they sell out of food. The dinner will consist of spaghetti, salad, garlic bread and a pink cupcake for $10.

“I just know her through the community, but I felt like I needed to do something for her, so I was the secretary with Adrian Volunteer Fire Department, and we always try to do something in the community to help somebody in some way,” Rutherford said. “The school schedule is so crazy so we’ve not been able to do anything there, so we just thought, we need to do something for the community, so this is our way of doing our community outreach.”

The benefit dinner will also have three auction items including a comfort basket full of chocolate, a candle, chai tea and movies and it’s in an antique basket provided by Genevia Jenkins.

“We have a matted picture from Lanora’s Custom Picture Framing,” Rutherford said. “McDonald’s gave us a coupon for a family of four each free. I think that’s two value meals or two combo meals and two kids’ meals. We will also have the McDonald’s McSavings cards for $5, and all of the money raised at the benefit goes strictly to Crystal.”

All the money raised during the event will help Crystal Chidester with various expenses such as travel.

“It will be for treatment expenses, going to and from there, and she has another surgery coming up to remove any cancer that’s left,” Rutherford said. “Of course, her immune system is so compromised that she just can’t go anywhere except to treatment and home.”

She said they may be able to offer delivery if someone wants to put it an order and the person is in town. People may place orders by calling the Adrian Fire Department at 304-472-4736.
