Three more people die of COVID-19 in West Virginia, 24 new confirmed cases on Monday

Three more West Virginians have died of COVID-19, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources announced Monday.

All three deaths were women in Jackson County, ages 76, 91 and 92, according to the DHHR.

Overall, the number of confirmed cases in West Virginia increased by 24 on Monday. Locally, Upshur County stayed at four confirmed cases, while Lewis County increased by one and is now also reporting four known cases of COVID-19.

“The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports as of 5 p.m. on April 27, 2020, there have been 43,227 laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 1,077 positive, 42,150 negative and 37 deaths,” the DHHR said in a press release.

Early Monday, Gov. Jim Justice announced the state would begin to reopen this week, using a target of staying under 3 percent on cumulative positive test results. That number was 2.49 percent as of the Monday evening update, with the daily positive rate just 0.6 percent.

About 52 percent of the West Virginia cases remain active, according DHHR data. Of the cases that are no longer active, 481 people have recovered and 37 have died, a mortality rate of about 7.7 percent.

New cases were reported Monday in Berkeley, Fayette, Jefferson, Kanawha, Lewis, Mason, Monongalia, Pocahontas, Putnam, Wayne and Wood counties.
