D&E student teachers gain experience in the classroom

ELKINS – Davis & Elkins College education students are gaining practical experience in the public school system by working as student teachers in the final phase of their undergraduate career.  

Their student teaching placements come after spending more than 120 hours in K-12 classrooms observing, co-teaching, co-planning and tutoring.

Students working under the mentorship of co-operating teachers are: Jessica Anderson of Huttonsville, assigned to Annette Jordan, sixth grade, Elkins Middle School; Lauren Cain of Elkins, assigned to Susan Isner, fourth grade, North Elementary School; Alyssa Jacobs of Hartly, Delaware, assigned to Amy White, kindergarten, Third Ward Elementary School; Victoria Kyle of Elkins, assigned to Danielle Riggins, fifth grade, Midland Elementary School; Haley Lloyd of Beverly, assigned to Cathy Duffield, first grade, Third Ward Elementary School; Rosie McTaggart of Hyattsville, Maryland, assigned to Patricia Lambert, fourth grade, Jennings Randolph Elementary School; Kendyl Taylor of Elkins, assigned to Stacie Friddle, fourth grade, Third Ward Elementary School; and Alice Wagler of Huttonsville, assigned to Holly Davis, fifth grade, George Ward Elementary School.

The Davis & Elkins College Teacher Education Program prepares competent, caring and qualified teachers for schools in Appalachia and in national and global communities.

Students seeking certification in elementary education grades K-6 undertake a major in elementary education, which leads to the awarding of a Bachelor of Arts degree.

A student seeking certification in a content specialization (grades 5-9, and/or 9-adult) must declare a major outside of education with a declared minor in education.

A $270 Rotary Club of Buckhannon-Upshur grant will help Buckhannon Academy Elementary School launch a hygiene closet stocked with deodorant, toothpaste, feminine products and other essentials for students in need. The school already offers a Comfort Closet, a shower and a therapy dog.
