West Virginia families are expected to receive about 2,000 kits of newborn and postpartum supplies through a federal program’s national expansion, according to the Governor’s Office.
The office’s Oct. 9 release says West Virginia is the first state receiving kits in the expansion of the Newborn Essentials Support Toolkit (NEST), a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services initiative.
Gov. Patrick Morrisey and Tom Engels, administrator of the Health Resources and Services Administration, marked the launch Friday at WVU Medicine Golisano Children’s in Morgantown.
Each kit has more than 20 items. Diapers, wipes and an infant thermometer are packed alongside breastfeeding and postpartum recovery supplies and a blood-pressure monitor. Families also get information on recovery after childbirth, infant care and safety, feeding and family resources.
“NEST brings together practical resources and important health information at a time when they can make a real difference for both mother and child,” Morrisey said in the release.
My Buckhannon reported in September on postpartum education at CAMC Women and Children’s Hospital.
The release does not specify who qualifies for a kit or how families can get one.
