Several events scheduled for Patriots Week in Buckhannon

Patriots Week is set for Sept. 8-13 in Buckhannon, featuring VA outreach and claims assistance Sept. 9, a veterans’ meeting and presentation, and a Sept. 13 ham-and-bean fundraiser to benefit local veterans.

Mayor Robbie Skinner will declare the period September 8 to September 13 Patriots week here in Buckhannon on Thursday, September 4.

Buckhannon’s Frank B. Bartlett American Legion Post 7 will be holding events during Patriot Week. On Tuesday, September 9, a VA Outreach Team from the Clarksburg VA Hospital will be at the post to assist veterans with accessing their benefits, answer questions, and help coordinate enrollment into the VA system, if eligible. Other groups have been invited to participate.

Additionally, VA-accredited claims officers will be on site that day, helping veterans and their surviving spouses in filing VA claims. If you haven’t previously filed a claim, there will be assistance available to complete the initial paperwork to file a claim.

On Tuesday evening, the Post’s monthly meeting will be held, and prior to the meeting, a presentation by VA Secretary Doug Collins will be shown. All veterans and surviving spouses are invited to the meeting. Dinner will be at 6, and the meeting begins at 7. If you are interested in joining our organization, bring your DD214. West Virginia’s American Legion State Commander Rich Crumm hopes to be in attendance.

On Saturday, September 13, there will be a ham and bean, cornbread, drink, and dessert sale at the Legion Post. These plates will be $5 each, and you can eat in or carry out. A 50/50 raffle will also be held during the day. Doors open at 11 AM and will be open until 2 PM or until they sell out (which they did last time). All proceeds go to programs and efforts to assist veterans and their families in Upshur County.

The Post home is located at 16 S. Kanawha Street, and you can call the post at 304-460-7377 if you have any questions.
