Basketball ‘Cats fall on the road to Walsh, 102-80

NORTH CANTON (Ohio) — West Virginia Wesleyan’s men’s basketball team had a good day scoring from the field but could not sink free throws and could not hold off thethree-point prowess of Walsh University and suffered its tenth loss of the year, 102-80, Tuesday in Canton, Ohio.

Walsh hit 14-of-32 three-pointers (44 percent) while Wesleyan managed only 7-of-24 (29 percent). Free throw percentages were also strikingly lopsided; the Cavaliers made 26-of-30 while the Bobcats were off-target, completing just 9-of-18 from the charity stripe. A third weighted factor that gave Walsh the upper hand was points off turnovers: Walsh scored 21 points off of the Bobcats’ 10 turnovers and Wesleyan scored just eight points off of six Walsh giveaways.

Five Bobcats scored in double digits including Stephen Ovia with 17, Alex Mirhosseini with 14, Anthony Crosby with 13, Alex Gray with 10, and Curtis Litton with 10. Gray led the team in rebounds with six but turned the ball over four times.

The Cavaliers also put up five double-digit scores as Kobe Mitchell led the way, scoring 30 points on 8-of-11 from the field that included 6-of-9 three-pointers. Ayden Carter added 22 and was on the foul line often where he dropped 9-of-9 charity points. Carter also led the game in rebounds with nine.

Wesleyan will play on the road against Concord University (3-6, 2-3) after the holiday break. The game in Athens, W.Va. is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 8 with a 7:30 p.m tip.
