St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation funds advanced ophthalmology equipment through Lavera Clark Trust

The St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation has funded the purchase of new advanced ophthalmology imaging equipment for WVU Medicine St. Joseph’s Hospital, made possible through a generous trust established by the late Lavera Clark.

In her will, Clark directed that her trust be used to support initiatives related to macular degeneration, diabetes or education—a vision that aligns directly with the Foundation’s mission to enhance patient care and community health. Honoring her wishes, the Foundation allocated the trust funds toward the acquisition of Optos retinal imaging technology, significantly expanding diagnostic capabilities for patients in the community.

The Optos system is an advanced ophthalmology imaging platform that uses scanning laser technology to capture ultra-widefield images of the retina—up to 200 degrees—in a single, quick and often dilation-free scan. This comprehensive view allows clinicians to detect and monitor conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and macular degeneration earlier and more effectively than traditional retinal imaging methods.

“This gift is a powerful example of how planned giving can leave a lasting impact,” said Paula Cutright, director of the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation. “Ms. Clark’s trust directly supports earlier detection and improved management of eye diseases that affect so many in our community. Because of her generosity, patients will benefit from advanced technology close to home for years to come.”

The new equipment strengthens St. Joseph’s Hospital’s commitment to early diagnosis and prevention, particularly for patients living with diabetes and age-related eye conditions—two areas of growing need in the region.

The Foundation hopes Clark’s legacy also raises awareness of how community members can support local healthcare through estate planning and trust gifts. Individuals may choose to designate their trust or estate to the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation, ensuring their values and passions continue to make a difference for future generations.

“Planned gifts are one of the most meaningful ways donors can support healthcare in our community,” Cutright added. “They allow donors to create a legacy while helping ensure advanced care and technology remain available locally.”
