BUCKHANNON — The Charles W. Gibson Public Library in downtown Buckhannon has taken steps to expand its offerings and accessibility.

The library has initiated a monthly book club and revamped its library card system to provide access to digital resources. Library staff also hold a weekly story time and are excited to be offering quarterly children’s activities throughout the next year. Most recently, the library hosted “African Storytime: A Celebration of Culture,” which was presented in partnership with Laurie Goux and the Sleeth Gallery African Art Exhibit on Aug. 26.

The monthly book club initiative invites participants to engage in structured discussions and shared reading experiences. For instance, the current book club selection is “Lessons in Chemistry” by Bonnie Garmus, and the club will meet to discuss the book at 2 p.m. on Sept. 9.

“Each month, the club selects a book for readers to delve into, facilitating communal dialogue and interaction around the chosen literary work,” said library Director Catherine Norko.

The library has also introduced redesigned library cards that offer enhanced digital access.

“Patrons can use these modern cards to access an extensive collection of eBooks and audiobooks for free,” Norko said Norko. “This expansion allows users to explore a diverse range of digital resources, with the convenience of reading and listening on personal devices.”

The library, which has not been renovated in the 81 years since it opened, is also going to go through some changes in the near future. You can read about the proposed changes in this April 2023 MyBuckhannon article here.

“I’m excited for the eventual renovations because it’ll be helpful for us when planning programs and events,” Norko said. “Having enough space for any of these events is important.”

The library maintains an active presence on Facebook and Instagram, both serving as a conduit for disseminating information. The page provides updates about events such as the monthly book club and offers instructions on utilizing the newly designed library cards for digital content access. To stay up-to-date with happenings at the library, follow them on Instagram or Facebook.

Residents and those interested in the library’s offerings can also access information through its official website at charlesgibson.wvlibrary.info.

“The library’s efforts reflect its commitment to fostering engagement and providing diverse opportunities for literary exploration,” said Norko. “Through these events, the library continues to serve as a community hub for knowledge and interaction, aligning with the evolving needs of its patrons in the digital age.”
