West Virginia Wesleyan College students celebrate National Athletic Training Month

BUCKHANNON, West Virginia – West Virginia Wesleyan College’s School of Exercise Science and Athletic Training wrapped up a month of activities for National Athletic Training Month in March.

Current AT students and Exercise Science/5-Year Master’s in Athletic Training students attended a presentation by UPMC Sports Medicine, hosted at Duquesne University and networked with athletic trainers from Pittsburgh. Following the presentation, the group attended the AT Appreciation Night at PPG Paints Arena for the Pittsburgh Penguins versus Ottawa Senators hockey game.

Courtney Wilfong ‘23, and Easton Perry ’23, placed at the West Virginia Athletic Trainers Annual Sports Medicine Conference in Charleston, West Virginia. Athletic training programs from West Virginia University and Marshall University also participated in the student presentation portion of the conference.

Wilfong placed first with a student poster presentation and Perry placed second in student oral presentation.

“The state conference experience for me as a student presenter and award winner was exciting,” she said. “There was so much pride and effort put into creating my poster. It was such as rewarding experience to receive an award. I am thankful for the opportunity and the knowledge I gained from my attendance.”

Lastly, current AT students, exercise students and five-year MAT students, together with three faculty members, conducted an injury risk screening at the Buckhannon Fire Department.

“It is important to not only recognize but advocate for the athletic training profession and educating its purpose,” Wilfong said. “Each event that I attended was pleasurable, more importantly, educational and overall, a great way to celebrate National AT Month.”
