Mountain CAP Family Support Center to host free Monster Academy focused on social, emotional skills

BUCKHANNON — The Mountain CAP Family Support Center and Mountain CAP Child Advocacy Center present Monster Academy, a FREE social and emotional skills group for children ages 4-9.

The academy will take place at 30 East Main Street in Buckhannon, beginning April 18 from 5:30-6:30 p.m, and will be on every Tuesday following until June 6. Class size is limited to 5 and will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Parents will be expected to remain in the facility while children participate. Please contact 304-878-1115 or email Lvannostrand@mountaincapwv.org to register your child for the class.

Monster Academy will use the Emotional ABCs curriculum. Children will learn self-awareness, social awareness, and relationship skills.

Children will work towards learning how to:

  • define an emotion
  • observe their own and other’s emotional responses
  • develop emotional vocabulary
  • see that emotions can be complicated and change easily
  • focus on face and body language
  • develop a method of breathing that helps them reflect on their emotions

We look forward to serving many families in our community! This group will have a maximum group limit of 4-5 children. Priority will come on a first-come-first-serve basis. If your child is not selected this round, they will be added to our waitlist for our next group!

This is a closed group (meaning no new members will be added once each group begins). Certificates and prizes will be given to children who complete at least 4 out of the 6 group sessions (unless otherwise arranged).

Children will have the opportunity to attend Monster Academy more than once! This group will begin by covering the basics and will be modified to include more difficult social and emotional skills.
Please see attached interest form to apply!

For more information, please email or call Lise-Marie VanNostrand (Family Support Center Director) at: 304-878-1115 or lvannostrand@mountaincapwv.org. The goal of this group is to run on an ongoing basis, depending on community interest and availability of the therapist.
