Wesleyan softball splits twin with Fairmont State

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The West Virginia Wesleyan softball team split a twin bill at Fairmont State Monday evening, winning the first game 4-0 but dropping the second game 3-1. The Lady Bobcats put up 12 hits between the two games but couldn’t turn them into enough runs in the second game.

Game 1
Wesleyan got their first hit in the top of the third after going down in order in the first two innings. In that inning, the Lady Bobcats had two runners in scoring position but ended the inning with a strikeout, leaving them with nothing. That changed in the top of the fourth with Taylor Swartz singling and swiping second base to get in scoring position. Kiley Turner took advantage, singling to left to bring Swartz in.

Hannah Hudson continued her strong performance, getting out of each inning without any damage done. Swartz gave Hudson some comfort in the top of the sixth with a one-run triple, plating Morgan Norris after she singled to get on. Alyssa Rohr and Norris gave Hudson even more insurance in the top of the seventh, hitting back-to-back one-run singles to make it 4-0. The Falcons made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh but Hudson was able to get out of the inning and secure the win.

Alexa Andrews went 2-4 at the plate, being the lone Falcon with multiple hits. Shelby Reed went 5 2/3 innings, giving up two runs (both earned) on five hits and two walks, taking the loss.

Norris and Swartz both went 2-4 and had an RBI to lead the Lady Bobcats. Rohr and Turner also added an RBI each. Hudson picked up her sixth win of the season with another complete game performance, giving up five hits, walking four and striking out six.

Game 2
Fairmont State broke the early offensive silence in the bottom of the third, hitting a two-run home run with two outs. With the Lady Bobcats struggling to muster any offense, the Falcons extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth on a double from Hannah Workman and then a one-run single from Emily Riggs.

The Lady Bobcats were able to lead the top of the seventh off with a home run from Norris to trim the Falcon lead to 3-1. That was all WVWC was able to put together as the game ended with three-straight groundouts.

Myaih Cloud’s home run led the Falcons with two RBIs. Riggs added the other RBI, going 2-3 at the plate. Emma Gates pitched a complete game, giving up one earned run off of four hits. Gates did not walk or strikeout a batter.

Norris had two hits and an RBI, leading the Lady Bobcats. Bella Posey and Jenna Christopher also had a hit. Abigail O’Shields took the loss, giving up three runs (all earned) on eight hits and a walk.
