Cage Bucs hang early but drop 68-48 decision on the road to University in 2022 opener

MORGANTOWN – The Buckhannon-Upshur basketball Buccaneers played with University for a half, but couldn’t overcome 29 turnovers in their debut last week in Morgantown against the University Hawks as the Bucs lost a 68-48 decision.

Down 8-4 early, Zach Calef-Boring put in a lay-up, and Jaden Westfall scored from underneath to even the game at 8-8.

Westfall scored on a putback to deadlock the game again at 12-12, but University’s Landon Cool scored on a lay-up to wrap up the first quarter putting the Bucs down by two, at 14-12.

University started the second quarter on a 6-0 run but the Bucs answered with their own 6-0 run getting four points from Calef-Boring and two from Bryson Johnston as that left the Bucs down by two, at 20-18, with five minutes left in the half.

University closed the quarter on a 10-5 run taking a 30-23 lead at the break.

Carter Zuliani scored on a putback to trim the B-U deficit down to five, at 35-29, but the Hawks went on a 10-0 run before Nathaniel Ringer ended the Buc scoring drought with a three-pointer making it a 45-32 contest with 1:14 left in the third quarter.

The Bucs trailed by 14 at the end of the third quarter, 48-34.

Jevon Westfall opened the final frame with a lay-up bringing the Bucs to within 12, but they were never able to get any closer the rest of the way.

University went on a 6-0 run to extend their lead to 20, at 62-42, with 2:47 remaining in the game and went on to win by 20.

Calef-Boring led the Bucs with 13 points while University was paced by Kaden Farrell who scored a game-high 17 points.

The Bucs were slated to make a trip to Jefferson this past weekend for a two-day, two-game tournament but it was canceled when one of the teams pulled out.

“We were disappointed in many ways to miss out on the tournament and some great competition,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jason Westfall. “Our team was looking forward to putting the University game behind us. We have been working hard to eliminate our weaknesses that showed up in our opener. We are working to fill both games, and we hope to add a home game for sure.”

The Bucs will now be back in action Tuesday at Lincoln for a 7:30 p.m. start.
