Gladys Lucille Roth

Gladys Lucille Roth (née Sponaugle), 88, passed away Dec. 1, 2022, in Woodbridge, VA.

Born March 28, 1934, in Miletus, WV, Gladys lived a rich life full of love. She met her husband, Bruce Darrell Roth, at Nickles Bakery in Navarre, Ohio, where she was a pan greaser, and he was the chief doughnut fryer. Married for 70 years, they lived in Ohio, Indiana, and Maryland before settling in Virginia.

Gladys, aka Glade, Gladdy, Mom, and Grandma, was a humble homebody, but her selfless, nurturing spirit touched countless lives: family, friends, and the many kids she helped raise in 40 years of providing low-cost in-home daycare. She spread joy through letters, cards, and gifts; she kept her mail carrier very busy, sending hundreds of cards per year. She laughed easily and had the brightest smile you’ve ever seen. She was the embodiment of kindness and always put her family’s needs before her own.

Gladys is irreplaceable, but her spark lives on through her husband, 5 kids, 13 grandkids, and 3 great-grandchildren. She’s survived by her husband Bruce, sister Bill Lafferty, brother Clyde Sponaugle, half-brothers Al and Donald Gurney, son Rich Roth, and daughters Janet Kimble, Margie Urano, Patta Murray, and Carol Roth. She was preceded in death by her brothers George and Richard Sponaugle and half-sister Joyce Shriner.

She will be laid to rest among the hills and hollers of West Virginia that she loved. Friends will be received Thursday, December 8, 2022, from 12 PM (noon) to 1 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 1 PM with burial to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the OWL VFD online at www.charitynavigator.org/ein/541087526 or mailed to 910 Highams Court, Woodbridge, VA 22191.

Online condolences may be made to the family at www.polingstclair.com. Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
