TENNERTON — In continuing to bring you the best sports coverage in Upshur County, the My Buckhannon sports department is pleased to present another edition of our exclusive — Raising the Jolly Roger With…

In ‘Raising the Jolly Roger With…’ the My Buckhannon sports department will interview a senior student-athlete from Buckhannon-Upshur to get to know them better and what makes them tick both on and off the field. Don’t settle for cheap knockoffs!

Our student-athlete this week is Joel Hershman — enjoy!

1. Please list all the sports you have played at B-U and what year you played them?

Football (2019-2022), wrestling (2019-2021) and track (2019-2022).

2. What has been your favorite athletic moment at Buckhannon-Upshur that you participated in?

When we won “The Pick” back from Lewis County in football my junior year at home.

3. Describe your toughest practice at Buckhannon-Upshur. What sport and who was the coach?

It was a wrestling practice before our state meet and I remember it being 100 degrees in the room and I was dead tired but we had to keep pushing ourselves and our coach was Jacob Orr.

4. Do you have a favorite saying from one of your head coaches?

“Lock the gates” from head football coach Zach Davis.

5. What was or is your favorite class you have taken at Buckhannon-Upshur and who taught it? Why was it your favorite?

Either English 11 with Mrs. Dawson or Accounting 2 with Mrs. Dean. Both teachers just made the class fun and made you feel like they really cared about you as a person and understood life outside the classroom.

6. What is your favorite thing about being a Buccaneer?

The history and hearing the stories from my dad and my coaches about their old teammates and coaches and what it was like for them it makes me proud to be a Buccaneer.

7. If you were asked to play another sport, what would it be and why?

Men’s volleyball. My friends and would all do it if we could. We all find volleyball very fun and enjoyable.

8. Who is your hero and why?

I would have to say my dad and coach Jim Gregory from the middle school. Both taught me how to be a respectful strong young man and how to be a good man.

9. What do you want to be when you grow up?

I want to either be a physical therapist or a sports physiologist.

10. What are your initial plans after graduation this spring?

To join my brother up at WVU and be a Mountaineer.

11. What question do you hate to answer?

If I regret anything because the answer will always be no. Everything is done for a reason, to learn to grow and I know the Lord above has a plan for me.

12. Who is the best athlete in your family?

Not to toot my own horn but I’d have to say me.

13. Do you have a favorite vacation spot? If so, where?

I don’t honestly. Everywhere I’ve gone has had it’s perks and down sides but nothing beats my Country Roads.

14. What is your favorite food and the one thing you won’t eat?

My favorite food probably is Mexican Food in general and I would never eat sushi.

15. What advice would you give to a young athlete ready to start his/her time as a Buccaneer?

Enjoy every second of it. “Life moves pretty fast if you don’t stop and look around once in a while you could miss it.” That quote is no lie. It feels like last week I was a freshman and now I’m going into my last year as a Buccaneer.
